How Do You Know If You Need Orofacial Wellness Care?

Our services

Temporomandibular Joint Therapy (TMJ)

Our TMJ evaluation is designed to identify what may be contributing to jaw pain, headaches, facial tension, clicking, or limited jaw movement. During your visit, we’ll review your symptoms, evaluate your bite and jaw function, and check the surrounding muscles for tenderness or tension. When appropriate, X-rays or additional imaging may also be recommended.

Once we better understand the source of your discomfort, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan focused on reducing pain, improving jaw function, and addressing the underlying cause of your symptoms. Treatment recommendations may also include EMFACE as an advanced, non-invasive option to help support TMJ relief and improve muscle function in the jaw and facial area.

Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional therapy is a personalized exercise-based treatment designed to improve the way the tongue, lips, jaw, and facial muscles work together. By correcting muscle habits and movement patterns, therapy can help address concerns such as mouth breathing, poor tongue posture, improper swallowing, and oral muscle imbalance.

These guided exercises are tailored to each patient and are intended to support better breathing, healthier oral function, improved facial development, and greater stability following orthodontic treatment. The overall goal is to create more balanced muscle function and promote long-term oral wellness.

Airway and Sleep Apnea

Better sleep starts with a healthy airway.

Snoring, waking up tired, morning headaches, clenching or grinding, and daytime fatigue are often more than annoyances. They can be signs that your airway is narrowing while you sleep. Untreated sleep apnea is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, weight gain, mood changes, and poor concentration, yet most people who have it don’t know it.

As your dental team, we see the clues first: worn teeth, a scalloped tongue, enlarged tori, a tongue or lip tie, a narrow palate. That’s why every adult patient at Challenger Family Dental receives an airway and sleep screening during their regular exam.

Oral Cancer Screening and Biopsy

An oral cancer screening is a quick, painless exam of the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, floor and roof of the mouth, throat, and neck. The doctor looks and feels for anything unusual, such as white or red patches, sores that don’t heal, lumps, or areas of thickened tissue. Adjunct tools such as fluorescence lights can make abnormal tissue easier to see. Oral cancer often causes no pain in its early stages, and it is far more treatable when caught early, so routine screening matters for everyone. That is especially true for tobacco users, heavy drinkers, and people at risk for HPV-related cancers.

When a suspicious area is found, a biopsy confirms what it is. The doctor numbs the area and removes a small sample of tissue, either with a brush biopsy that collects surface cells or with a small incisional or excisional biopsy. The sample goes to an oral pathology lab for diagnosis. Most lesions turn out to be benign. A biopsy replaces guesswork with a definite answer, and if anything concerning is found, the patient can be referred for treatment right away.

Salivary Testing

Saliva carries a lot of information about oral and overall health, and testing it is completely non-invasive: the patient simply rinses or provides a small sample. Basic salivary tests measure flow rate, pH, and buffering capacity, which show how well the mouth protects itself against acid and decay. More advanced lab-based tests can identify the specific bacteria that drive gum disease, measure cavity-causing bacteria levels, and detect high-risk strains of oral HPV.

These results let treatment be built around a patient’s actual biology rather than generic recommendations. For example, a test can identify which periodontal pathogens are present so antimicrobial therapy can be targeted. It can flag patients at high cavity risk who would benefit from prevention, or point to dry mouth related to medications or systemic conditions. Salivary testing also gives patients clear, objective data, which makes it easier to understand why a recommended treatment matters.

Massage and Esthetics

Therapeutic massage focuses on the head, neck, jaw, and face, where tension from clenching, grinding, poor posture, and stress tends to build up. Services such as TMJ-focused massage, head and neck massage, and lymphatic drainage help relax overworked jaw muscles, ease tension headaches, and reduce facial puffiness. They also support recovery after dental and surgical procedures. Massage works especially well alongside dental care for patients with TMJ discomfort, bruxism, or airway-related muscle strain.

Esthetic services care for the skin and the overall face that frames the smile. These include professional facials, skin analysis with facial scanning technology, and non-invasive facial toning and skin-rejuvenation treatments. Each plan is tailored to the client’s skin type and goals, whether that is a clearer complexion, firmer facial muscles, or a refreshed appearance. Combined with smile design, esthetics takes a whole-face approach: a healthy, attractive smile looks its best when the skin and facial structure around it are cared for too.
